UWC Pearson College Canada 2018-2020
Sara wrote this in August 2018, before she left to Canada:
"Since I was little I dreamt of studying abroad.
When I learned about the UWC scholarships, my wishes seemed to be so close to become real.
I have learned about the huge opportunities that these scholarships offer you and realized that it represents more than I have ever expected.
I will be able to study in a well-structured educational system, where I can choose my own subjects in line with my passions. I will also study in a more practical way, being able to apply in real life.
However, I realised that UWC is not just about the academic part: it's about how you develop as a person , about the opportunity to work in a team and share ideas with young people from all over the world. Last but not least, we can share about the values and the principles that inspires you.
I am also looking forward to join in volunteer activities and not only. Besides, I will have the opportunity to start up clubs that pursue the areas I am most passionate about.
Honestly, I can hardly wait to face this challenge and I can only be grateful for the chance that has been given to me.
I promise to make this international movement known in all possible ways and I will keep you updated on all the stages I will go through.
And here is Sara's message after the first two months at UWC Pearson College Canada:
In July 2019, after her first year at UWC Pearson College, here are her thoughts:
"UWC has definitely been the chance of my life. I can honestly say that UWC is magic! I hadn’t fully realised how big this opportunity was until I arrived on campus, at Pearson College UWC. When I stepped foot on campus, I just knew that this was where I wanted to be. After three flights and some adventures at the airport, I was overwhelmed by the warm welcome. That was the moment when I realised that my expectations will be exceeded, and I wasn’t wrong. The months that followed were fantastic. I was so amazed by everything I found on campus, that I decided to share my experience with as many people as possible. I filmed everything and, as a result, Pearson College and UWC have been featured on national television and online. And this is just the beginning. The friendships that I established on campus with people from all over the world mostly changed the way I see things. I now have a broader perspective on the world and things around me. I have changed a lot, but looking back, I like the person that I am becoming. What fascinates me about UWC is that UWC students are motivated by both academic performance and personal development. In other words, UWC focusses on forming you as a person. I feel that all UWC activities made me responsible, open-minded and aware of the global issues that we face nowadays. ( starting from climate change issues and ending with political conflicts) A very dear memory of mine is One World, which was put on stage at McPherson Playhouse Theatre three times in front of hundreds of spectators. We delighted the public with artistic moments that allowed us to share the cultural diversity that we have at Pearson College UWC. It was an emotional moment, since all of us - students, teachers, residences on campus- performed. The moment was even more special for me, as I was given the big opportunity to be the Master of Ceremony and present One World. Now, at the end of the year, when I think of Pearson College, I think of my roommates, who will always be my sisters. At the same time, my teachers come to my mind really quickly. It is amazing how they have helped me grow as a person and realise that they are not only my mentors, but my friends as well. Yes, I have to admit - IB can be a little bit challenging at times. It uses a teaching and learning model based on perseverance and ambition. But everything changes and becomes easier when you have next to you passionate teachers who keep sharing their knowledge outside the classes as well: in the cafeteria, on the football field, in nature and even on our way to Race Rocks on boats and canoes. And it is worth mentioning that UWC uses experiential learning and “hands-on” activities. UWC is not simply a college, it is a lifetime experience that makes you associate every country with a dear friend."
